Spray Paint + Tape Wall Art

March 30, 2015

Art is expensive. You don’t have to be an artist to create some interesting, modern spray paint art..and no one needs to know how easy it was!

You can get a very large canvas for cheap if you watch Michael’s or JoAnn fabrics sales. They often have 50% off, so the larger canvases are very reasonable. Or if you’re extra ambitious you can always stretch your own canvases

First off, I just want to say that this is just inspiration for so many different ways to create your own spray paint art. Use your imagination to create your own.

DO:
– create your own designs
– choose your own color scheme

DON’T
– overanalyze every piece of tape. It is hard to mess up an abstract piece of art. Just have fun with it.

Here’s how I did it:

First off, I don’t have a photo of this, but I knew I wasn’t going to frame this piece (too expensive) so I spray painted the edges gold. This gives a polished look and adds a bit of interest from the side. You can easily choose your own edge colors – a pop of mint or red?! I used painters tape to tape over the edges before continuing.

Next, I spray painted the canvas black. Originally I wanted a very solid black, but I started to like the streaky look, so I stopped before I got to full coverage:

Time to create my design! I used the painters tape to create a random abstract pattern. I doubled up in some areas to create a thicker line, or you could even use different thicknesses of tape.

Once I was happy with my pattern, I used a small roller to spread white paint over the entire canvas. You could easily use white spray paint for this as well, I just happened to have a ton of extra paint lying around, so I went this route.

Wait for it to dry, and remove all of the tape.

Viola! You’re an artist. Pretty impressive, eh? 😉
